Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor decorating can be a daunting task for the holidays. If you have ever tried to hang lights on the house, you know what I mean. My cousin broke his ankle last Christmas while climbing on the roof to put up his Christmas lights. You don’t need to let this happen. Getting your decorating done before the weather gets bad is a good idea. Some people start decorating in October in order to beat the ice, snow and cold.
First of all, if you do plan on climbing on a ladder, be sure it is stable. You can purchase ladder stabilizers at most hardware and home improvement stores that will help with stabilizing your ladder. It is always a good idea to have someone else around to help you. You should never climb a ladder without a spotter. Climbing onto the roof seems like a good idea, but if there is ice and snow on the roof, it’s probably not the best idea.
Using gutter hooks are the easiest solution for hanging the lights on the house if you have gutters. There are also hooks that slide under the first layer of shingles at the drip edge. Some people suggest using nails. This is not a bad idea if you want something that will stay up year after year to hang your lights on. However, if you are using nails, be sure they are galvanized so they don’t rust. You don’t want to have rust streaks down your fascia or siding. On areas that are not exposed much to the weather there are several alternatives made by 3M for sticky hooks that can be easily removed without damage to your siding or trim. Shop around, there are lots of choices for Christmas light accessories such as light clips, timers, and extension cords.
There are a variety of lights that you can purchase to install on your house.
